Frozen Foods in the Air Fryer
The air fryer's greatest superpower: turning frozen food into something crispier than the oven ever could, in half the time. No preheating required.

Times are starting points — every air fryer runs slightly hot or cool. Adjust ±2 min and always verify meat doneness with a thermometer.
Why the air fryer wins on frozen foods
Frozen foods are the air fryer's sweet spot because almost everything in the freezer aisle is pre-fried — flash-fried at the factory to set the crust, then frozen. That means the cooking job at home is not "fry raw food," it is "re-crisp an already-cooked crust." The air fryer's forced convection does this in roughly half the time of a conventional oven, with no oil added, and without the soggy spots a microwave leaves behind.
Practically: no preheat is needed for most frozen foods (the cold food dropping into a hot basket is fine), no oil is needed (the crust already contains the fat from the factory fry), and you should expect crispier results than the oven because the fan drives heat into every surface — including the underside through the perforated basket.
Frozen-food FAQ
Do I need to thaw frozen food first?
No. Cook straight from frozen — thawing most frozen snacks adds moisture that fights the crisping you want. The exception is raw frozen meat (chicken breasts, burgers), which is safe to cook from frozen but cooks more evenly if you sear from frozen and finish at a slightly lower temp.
Do I add oil to frozen food?
Usually no. Frozen fries, nuggets, and most pre-fried snacks already contain the oil from the factory fry — adding more makes them greasy and smokes. A tiny spray is fine only for items that look dry or frost-burned.
Why is my frozen food coming out soggy?
Almost always one of three things: (1) the basket is overcrowded so the cold food insulates its neighbors and steams instead of crisps — cook in a single layer; (2) you skipped preheat on items that need a hot start (pizza rolls, breaded cheese); (3) you forgot to shake at the halfway mark so only the top crisps. A 400°F basket with a single layer and one mid-cook shake fixes most cases.
Can I cook rock-solid frozen food straight from the freezer?
Yes. For pre-fried snacks (fries, nuggets, tots), add 2–3 minutes to the listed time and shake once or twice. For raw frozen meat, add roughly 50% more time and ALWAYS confirm the safe internal temperature with a thermometer (165°F for poultry, 160°F for ground meat, 145°F + 3-min rest for whole pork). Never partly cook raw meat to "finish later."
Air fryer vs oven: frozen foods compared
Typical manufacturer oven instructions vs the air fryer times on this page — same product, half the wait:
| Frozen food | Oven (package) | Air fryer | Time saved |
|---|---|---|---|
| French fries | 425°F · 20–25 min | 400°F · 12–15 min | ~10 min |
| Chicken nuggets | 400°F · 20–25 min | 400°F · 10–12 min | ~12 min |
| Pizza rolls | 425°F · 20–22 min | 380°F · 8–10 min | ~12 min |
| Mozzarella sticks | 450°F · 9–11 min | 390°F · 6–8 min | ~3 min |
| Fish sticks | 425°F · 20–22 min | 400°F · 10–12 min | ~10 min |
| Tater tots | 425°F · 22–25 min | 400°F · 12–15 min | ~10 min |
Oven times are typical package instructions across major frozen-food brands (McCain, Tyson, Totino's, Van de Kamp's, Ore-Ida); air fryer times are from our test chart. Always cook to a safe internal temperature for meat items.
